Coming off from the successful Australian tour in which one of the great highlights and positives was the maturity and confidence displayed by our youngsters, the lads are very upbeat and those involved are very much looking forward to playing Test cricket. People have asked me if it makes sense from a preparation point of view to be playing Tests in the lead up to a World Cup and my response has been that it does no harm at all as you are still playing cricket. Moreover, you are not under time-pressure so it is an opportunity to iron out or fine-tune techniques and so on. So, seeing that the three Tests are followed by a ODI series, I would say that this is excellent preparation for the World Cup.

As for the West Indies, they may have a new-look leadership but many of the faces are the same and they possess some quality players that can do a fair bit of damage on their day. I am surprised at the absence of Ramnaresh Sarwan, but Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dwayne Bravo and others are quality players so we need to be on our toes and we are focused on playing our best cricket with a view to dominating from ball one.

Lasith Malinga being rested in view of the forthcoming World Cup is a commonsense decision as he will be such a vital component in our bowling attack. We certainly do not wish to risk a repetition of his knee injury and the workload of three Test matches could well be too much of a strain. Additionally, we will be going into a full Test series for the very first time without the great man, Murali – so the loss of this pair equates to a considerable loss of experience and quality.
